
Providence Teacher’s Union President Maribeth Calabro joined WPRO’s Tara Granahan on Wednesday to discuss a recent decision by the outgoing Commissioner of Education Ken Wagner, which has forced Providence to cancel field trips for the remainder of the school year. Calabro also discussed the package of education reform bills presented by House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello and Senate President Dominick Ruggerio this week. LISTEN BELOW:

Rhode Island ACLU President Steve Brown replied to Calabro’s comments later on Granahan’s show Wednesday morning. The ACLU agreed with Wagner’s decision. TheACLU last week that school districts have a long history of trying to charge for extracurricular activities. But the state has always rejected those efforts on the grounds that schools have no authority under state law to impose them and they interfere with the right to a free and equal public education.
