A major winter storm has dropped a variety of weather on Southern New England from flooding rains on sections of areas Southeast of Providence to sleet and ice across Northwestern sections of Rhode Island.
The storm dropped between 2 and 4 inches of snow during the overnight hours Sunday before the precipitation changed to heavy rain for much of the region. The National Weather Service issued a Flood Warning across most of Rhode Island and Southeast Mass. Thunderstorms were imbedded inside the area of heavy rain.
The Rhode Island State Police reported 15 accidents and spin outs during the snow early Sunday morning. There were several more mishaps as the snow changed to rain, while condisions remained icy across Northern sections of the state.
The State Police are voicing their concerns about falling temperatures making roads slippery across the entire region. These concerns were compounded by the AFC title game with many Patriots fans expected to travel to the homes of friends and family to watch the game.
“We are realize people will be heading out to the game tonight and they’ll be consuming some alcohol. Consuming alcohol and icy road conditions aren’t a great mix”, said Capt Derek Borek of the State Police.
