Former White House Press Secretary and Rhode Island native Sean Spicer joined the Dan Yorke Show Friday afternoon as his book tour brings him back to Rhode Island. Spicer spoke with Dan about his experiences at the White House and his new book The Briefing.
Spicer explained he feels it important to share his experiences as President Trump’s controversial first press secretary. Spicer told Dan, “I can finally speak on my own.” Spicer served under Trump for seven months.
Dan asked Spicer if he felt remorse for his treatment of the press and the escalation of the tensions between the Trump administration and the press core during his time at the White House.
“I’ve expressed my regret at how my personal actions started with a lot of that,” Spicer said.”
While he takes ownership for his role in the relationship, he repeated that the press have to act appropriately as well and hopes that fair reporters are spotlighted.
In an explanation of what his time working with President Trump was like, Spicer said, “It was an unbelievably trying time for me emotionally and personally. It was a lot of things at once. It was turbulent, it was disruptive, it was chaotic. He continued, “I had some idea of what I was getting into. I don’t think I fully appreciated it.”
Dan also questioned Spicer about his description of Trump as a “unicorn.” He opined there will not be another successful candidate like Trump.
“The idea that other candidates are going to try to become the next Donald Trump is mythical,” he said.
Spicer also shared his thoughts about the release of the tape of President Trump that Michael Cohen secretly recorded. He told Dan, “I think it’s disturbing. There has to be a level of trust unless they’re doing something illegal… if you’re someone’s lawyer and you’re secretly taping someone… I look at that and wonder what type of person does that?”
Spicer will be making appearances at the Middletown Barnes & Noble and both RI Barrington Books locations this week.
