PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The lawyer for a Republican state senator being investigated by state police says his client has decided not to step down.
Sen. Nicholas Kettle’s attorney, Paul DiMaio, said on Wednesday that Kettle doesn’t believe he committed a crime and will stay in his seat. Kettle represents parts of Coventry, Foster, Scituate and West Greenwich.
DiMaio said on Tuesday that Kettle was likely to step down, after state police confirmed they’re investigating Kettle and searched his home. He says police seized a cellphone at the home. DiMaio says he also turned over Kettle’s computer, which Kettle gave him before the search.
Police haven’t said what they’re investigating. DiMaio says he doesn’t know, but thinks it involves photographs and Kettle’s recent breakup with a girlfriend.
DiMaio says he doesn’t believe there was a crime.
