PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The organizer of a candlelight vigil in Rhode Island’s capital city is urging self-reflection following the deadly violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Hundreds of people gathered Sunday for the solidarity rally at the Rhode Island State House in Providence. Participants held signs and chanted along with speakers during the event. Vigil organizer Ashley Hayes, who is white, tells WJAR-TV she felt she had a responsibility to denounce the idea of white supremacy.
Three people were killed Saturday and dozens were injured as white nationalists protested the decision in Charlottesville to remove a Confederate monument. A car rammed into a crowd of protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and a state police helicopter crashed into the woods, leaving two troopers onboard dead.
