PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Plans for a new Pawtucket Red Sox stadium are reaching a dead end at the Rhode IslandState House.
Leaders of the Democratic-controlled General Assembly expressed opposition Tuesday to considering the team’s request for a $23 million state investment to help build a downtown Pawtucket ballpark.
Pawtucket Democratic Mayor Donald Grebien has been working with the Boston Red Sox affiliate to file the legislation this week. Grebien has been leading efforts to pitch the $83 million project, which would include team and city investments.
Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, both Democrats, say they’re opposed to taking up the bill so late in the legislative year. Mattiello criticized Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo for sending mixed signals about her support.
Ruggerio says he’d consider reconvening in the fall.
