EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation says a plan to replace a bridge in East Providence is getting underway this weekend.
WPRI-TV reports the Pawtucket Avenue Bridge will be closed on eight weekends. The first closure will be from 7 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday. The on-ramp to Interstate 195 will also be closed.
Traffic will be detoured onto Broadway via Grosvenor and Warren Avenues. The interstate will get lane shifts: four lanes will be cut down to two in both directions.
The agency’s “accelerated replacement” method was used on bridges to and from the East Shore Expressway last year. The DOT had said it accelerated the project to avoid significant delays and congestion.
The DOT says the new bridge should be in place in four months.
