Calling it “chilling and sobering”, Rep. Patricia Serpa tells WPRO’s Tara Granahan that testimony last night during the Oversight Committee regarding the UHIP problems included stories of women and men delving into prostitution, in order to make ends meet.
Serpa, the chairperson of that committee, added that a spokesperson for Esther’s Well, which describes itself as “a program designed to empower and equip women to live an abundant and effective life in the here and now”, relayed stories of entering into prostitution for the first time and leaving small children home alone, while trying to make money in alternative ways.
Troubles with the UHIP computer at the Department of Human Services first came to light in September. Rep. Serpa described the latest developments as “collateral damage.”
