Health care giant Johnson and Johnson announced Monday that they will be opening a new technology and data center in Rhode Island in January. Governor Gina Raimondo welcomed Johnson and Johnson Global Vice President Steve Wrenn at a press conference at the State House on Monday morning. The center is expected to bring 75 high paying jobs to the city initially.
“We’re serious about embracing you and making you successful,” Raimondo told Wrenn. “All the investments we’re making in our people, and the talent and workforce development is paying off. They know we have the talent and we’re a great place to do business,” Raimondo added at the press conference.
Wrenn says Johnson and Johnson expects to start hiring by the first of the year. “What we’re looking for is May (2017) graduates, that’s why I wanted to talk to the different universities, we’d love to start interviewing people in January and February, start getting people on board right away,” Wrenn said. “Brown has one type of student, RISD has a different type, we need that big mix of students.”
The center will specialize in optimizing information technology and data analytics to create health-related software applications.
The state will support the New Jersey-based corporation with about $6 million in tax credits and other assistance.
