PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Running out of options to voice displeasure with presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, some delegates who oppose him have flirted with a movement to try to upend next week’s GOP convention in Cleveland.
Others simply won’t go. Rhode Island Republican delegate Dawson Hodgson, a former state senator and 2014 candidate for attorney general, resigned from his spot as a delegate because he wants no part in nominating Trump.
He’s joined others such as Shannon Jones, an Ohio state senator who also gave up her delegate seat.
Hodgson says Trump’s views are antithetical to American values of freedom and democracy.
Hodgson was elected as one of five delegates representing Ohio Gov. John Kasich. He’s been replaced by an alternate Kasich delegate, Christine Misto, who says she’s willing to support Trump.
