A series of shootings and stabbings in Providence included the shooting of a one-time basketball standout for Mount Pleasant High School.
Police said Kip Stewart, 22, was shot near the Hartford Park Housing Project Saturday night. He was in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital said police, who do not believe he was targeted.
It was just one in a string of violent incidents over the weekend.
Police were seeking a Cranston man, Jimmy Seth, 21, in the shootings of two women in front of 43 Health Ave., said Major David Lapatin, commander of the Providence Police detective division. He said Jeanette Nazario, 34, was shot in the upper left shoulder, and Aisha Robbins, 19, was shot in the left wrist. They were expected to survive their injuries.
“This was not a domestic (incident),” said Lapatin, “this, we believe came from an argument earlier in the day… involving these women.”
Maj. Lapatin said a man was stabbed multiple times at about 2:50 Saturday morning in the Biltmore garage by two men. The victim, who suffered non life-threatening wounds, did not know his attackers, who were apprehended by police.
At about 5:15 Sunday morning, police were called to Rhode Island Hospital where a man, Luis Molina sought treatment for a serious stab wound he received at the area of Smith Street and Oakland Avenue. Police searched the area, but did not immediately find any suspects. He is expected to survive the injury.
At about 8:30 Sunday night, a man, identified as Lawrence Crowell was shot at a party at Comstock Ave., his injury was described as not life-threatening, he transported himself to Rhode Island Hospital.
Major Lapatin said that the incidents are “probably not” connected with each other, and with the exception of the stabbing at the Biltmore garage, all of the victims apparently knew their attackers. He said the public should not be worried about unchecked violence.
“Hopefully we won’t lose any lives over this, and we will step up patrols in the upcoming weeks,” Lapatin said.
He said there were a few arrests associated with Saturday night’s Pride Weekend festivities in Providence, but none involved any violent incidents.
