PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island House of Representatives has passed a bill to help bakers buy wine in bulk for use in making wine biscuits.
The House voted 64-0 to pass the bill Thursday. The state Senate passed a companion bill Wednesday. Each chamber needs to approve the other’s bill before it heads to Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo.
Wine biscuits are commonly sold by Rhode Island’s Italian-American bakeries.
The legislation would create a special wine biscuit license letting bakers buy up to 2,000 gallons of wine a year from wholesalers. It’s been proposed for years by baker and North Providence Town Councilwoman Kristen Catanzaro.
Rep. Michael Marcello, a Scituate Democrat, says it’s the type of bill that shows how antiquated Rhode Island’s liquor laws are and how they need to be updated.
