The good government group RI Taxpayers will cease operations on March 10, according to a statement released by the group on Tuesday.
“It is with deep regret that we announce that R.I. Taxpayers must suspend its operations effective March 10,” read the statement. “Despite efforts to raise the necessary funds to keep our advocacy on behalf of the taxpayers of Rhode Island fiscally liquid, they have fallen short.”
The release goes on to say that with the passing of founder Harry Staley the group is “unable to maintain the fundraising levels that he was so successful in driving.”
The group’s spokeswoman Monique Cartier told WPRO’s Bill Haberman that the situation is “ironic – of all the states in the country Rhode Island most of all needs a taxpayer advocacy organization, but at the same time, it had to come from contributions by taxpayers, residents, and businesses. For whatever reasons, those were not forthcoming.”
