A resident of a top-floor apartment was killed Sunday night when a spectacular fire tore through a triple-decker house in Fall River.
Flames leaped from the upper-story windows as firefighters arrived at the apartment house at 65 Eastern Avenue, just blocks from a fire station. Firefighters battled bitter cold conditions to contain the flames, but found the victim, who was not immediately identified, inside the top-floor apartment.
“Everything’s frozen, nothing’s meant to work in this temperature,” Fall River District Fire Chief James Mellon told reporters at the scene. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
“Inside, there’s extensive damage to the third floor, it’s going to take us a while to sort that out,” Mellon said.
