PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Democratic leaders in Rhode Island are proposing to charge big-rig trucks $20 to cross through Rhode Island along Interstate 95.
Gov. Gina Raimondo, House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello and Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, announced the new truck toll plan Thursday. The tolling legislation being introduced into the General Assembly will help finance a 10-year public works project to repair deteriorating bridges and roads across the state.
Raimondo proposed a similar bill last year that passed the Senate but was blocked in the House.
The revised plan relies on a new source of federal money to lower the planned tolls and how much the state plans to borrow. Each toll would be about $3 and the maximum for a one-way route across the state would be $20.
