WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — The Warwick School Committee has fired its facilities director, but the specific reasons for the firing are unclear.
Superintendent Philip Thornton had confirmed that David LaPlante was placed on leave Friday. The committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to fire him.
Thornton says there were some problems in the department in terms of purchasing items. He says students were not endangered.
In a joint press release Mayor Scott Avedisian and Police Chiedf Steven McCartney said they “support the efforts of both the School Department, as well as the Police Department in this matter. There is still an on-going police investigation and as such, no further comments will be issued at this time. At the conclusion of the investigation, the facts surrounding the termination of Mr. LaPlante will come to light. Until then, we will not comment on or about the results of the search warrant or the items seized. Additionally, no arrest has been made at this point in the investigation.”
It’s not clear what was found in LaPlante’s home.
