PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A judge has found that Central Falls does not have to pay attorney’s fees in its receivership case involving a former mayor.
Charles Moreau and city councilors in 2010 unsuccessfully challenged the constitutionality of a new law that allowed a state-appointed receiver to take over management of the cash-strapped Rhode Island city.
The state’s high court in June found that Moreau should not have to cover $250,000 in city legal fees and that the city should reimburse him and the councilors for their fees. The city in turn asked a federal bankruptcy judge to block those claims.
The Providence Journal reports a judge ruled in favor of the city, saying Moreau didn’t file proof of claim documentation in the bankruptcy case.
Moreau, who served prison time for corruption, has appealed.
