PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A federal court judge in Rhode Island has approved a motion to dismiss the bankruptcy case of financially-beleaguered Central Coventry Fire District.
WPRI-TV reports Monday’s ruling in Providence transfers financial responsibility back to the district after three years of state receivership.
Judge Mark Pfeiffer filed for bankruptcy on behalf of the district in December 2014. Pfeiffer filed a motion to drop the bankruptcy case earlier this month at the recommendation of Gov. Gina Raimondo.
The district went into state receivership in 2012 after amassing about $4 million in debt.
CCFD Board of Directors chairman Fred Gralinski says the district has a positive fund balance of $1.9 million to start repaying what is owed.
The state is expected to hand control over to the board on Thursday.
