A taste of New Orleans came to Providence Friday night as two musical mainstays from the Crescent City, Kermit Ruffins and the Rebirth Brass Band headlined the first night of PVDFest, the three-day festival of music and art, food and culture that is making a comeback after a COVID-enforced shutdown.
Thousands of people filled Kennedy Plaza in front of the stage erected near City Hall, while thousands more streamed through Kennedy Plaza, closed to traffic and lined with food trucks for the event.
Other stages and displays are planned over several more blocks during the ensuing days of the festival, which runs through Sunday.
