A man wanted on an outstanding warrant led police on a chase from Massachusetts, through Rhode Island and into Connecticut before his pick-up truck was stopped by troopers following a standoff.

According to Massachusetts State Police, Ian Grant, 36 of Dartmouth fled police in New Bedford, evaded “stop sticks” set up on I-195 in Westport and collided with two cruisers late Wednesday morning, and one or more troopers discharged their firearms.

Grant’s house in Dartmouth was the site of a fire earlier in the morning.

Police issued a “be on the lookout” alert for Grant’s white Toyota pickup truck, which was later spotted in Jamestown, Rhode Island.

Police pursued his truck into Charlestown, Westerly, and over the state line into Stonington, Connecticut.

In a statement, Rhode Island State Police said that at times during the chase, Grant pointed what appeared to be an assault style rifle out of his window.

Connecticut State Troopers tried unsuccessfully to use “stop sticks” after Grant’s vehicle crossed the state line, according to Trooper First Class Pedro Muniz, before his truck was knocked off the road by a Rhode Island state trooper.

“Pursuit termination techniques were used to safely end the pursuit,” Muniz said. “Members of the Rhode Island State Police tactical team were on scene and were able to safely get Grant into custody.”

Video from a news helicopter showed Grant being pulled out through the truck’s driver’s side window. Muniz said officers were seeking a court search warrant to recover firearms from inside the truck. He said Grant was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

In a statement, Massachusetts State Police said troopers involved in the discharge of firearms were evaluated for stress at a local hospital and released, and that a use-of-force investigation would be conducted. Charges against Grant and details of rendition proceedings are pending.
