Police in Warwick have identified the man shot by four officers in a confrontation in the lobby of the police station late Friday afternoon.

Warwick Police Chief Bradford Connor said in a statement issued Monday that officers were leaving a briefing in the community room on the ground floor of the police station Friday when a man struck a female officer in the torso with a knife, which was deflected by her bullet-proof vest.

Chief Connor said that three-year department veteran Jessica Masso and three other officers opened fire on Jacob Thomas, 29. It wasn’t until one of them fired a taser that Thomas dropped the knife.

According to a statement from police later that night, the officers were uninjured.

Thomas was taken into custody, taken to Rhode Island Hospital in stable condition, and on Monday was still being treated. Chief Connor said when Thomas is discharged, he will face felony assault charges. It was not made clear why Thomas brandished the knife.

The four officers are on administrative leave pending a review. He identified them as Masso, Officer Oliver Pinheiro, who has been with the department for three years, Officer Michael Bailey, a three-and-a-half year veteran, and Sergeant Walter Larson, who’s been with the department for seven years.

Connor said the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office, Rhode Island State Police and Warwick Police continue to investigate the incident.
