Another giraffe has died at the zoo in Providence, the second death of a giraffe there this year.
The Roger Williams Park Zoo reports the death on Wednesday of its 28-year old Masai giraffe Sukari, which had to be euthanized by zoo personnel following long-standing treatment for significant arthritis and age-related ailments. Twenty eight is older than the life expectancy for most giraffes.
The death comes nearly a year after another, younger giraffe, 9-year old Tufani died at the zoo after what was described as gastrointestinal complications.
The zoo says that giraffes are an endangered species, there are about 35,000 remaining in the wild.
