PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island labor officials say the state’s unemployment rate fell slightly last month when the state added about 7,200 jobs.

The unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a percentage point to 5.8% in July, down from 5.9% in June.

The unemployment rate in July 2020 was 14%.

July’s state rate was slightly higher than the nation’s, which was 5.4%.

With the 7,200 jobs added in July, the state added 20,900 jobs in the first seven months of the year.

July’s increase marks the highest gain since August 2020.

The state has now regained 74% of the roughly 108,000 jobs lost during the pandemic shutdown.
