WAKEFIELD, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island researchers have tagged their second great white shark on the coast over the weekend.
The Atlantic Shark Institute says that the female shark is about 5 feet long and it was tagged and released on Saturday.
The Providence Journal reports that the tag will allow researchers to trace the shark whenever it passes through a receiver.
The director of the institute says this is the third shark they have tagged this year.
Fewer than 300 sharks have been tagged with this technology in the Northwest Atlantic.
The institute is also working in collaboration with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to study sharks.
