Couto Construction Surprises Local Veteran with Free Roof

U.S. Army veteran Admira Depina thought Couto Construction was visiting her home to inspect her roof, but owners Derek and Jason Couto had other ideas.

The brothers instead surprised her with news that they were replacing her roof for free.

“You’re getting a new roof. We lied. This isn’t an inspection,” Jason told her on the front lawn of her Randolph home.

“Oh my god,” was all she could say.

Through a partnership with the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project and Operation Homefront, Couto Construction is honoring the seven-year Army veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star with the free roof replacement.

Ms. Depina joined the U.S. Army after high school with the intention of making it her career. She was injured during her second combat tour and was honorably discharged with service-connected disabilities.

“It’s an honor to be able to help Ms. Depina,” says Couto Construction co-owner Derek Couto. “Our first roof giveaway was to a veteran and his wife from Wareham. It’s a special feeling to be able to do this again for someone who served our country.”

A single mother with a 4-year-old son, Ms. Depina has depleted much of her savings fixing the home and repairing the roof of the Randolph home she bought a year ago. Because the roof is 20 years old, it is not covered by her home insurance policy.

Couto Construction has been beautifying homes across Massachusetts and Rhode Island for more than 30 years. They’ve been featured nationally as one of the fastest growing companies and recognized by Owens Corning as Platinum Preferred contractors.

The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project is a nationwide effort started in 2016 to show gratitude and honor the veterans who served our country and the families who support them.
