Rhode Island’s Democratic-controlled state Senate voted Tuesday to condemn the acts of violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, and called for the removal of President Donald Trump through either the 25th Amendment or impeachment by Congress.

The “sense of the Senate” resolution was sponsored by Newport Democrat Dawn Euer, and notably co-sponsored by Senate President Dominick Ruggerio of Providence and Senate Majority Leader Michael McCaffrey of Warwick.

“We must unify through passage of this resolution by holding President Trump and his enablers accountable,” said Euer.

“We must unify by defending our key democratic pillars, free and fair elections, citizen participation in government, protection of our citizens’ human rights and honoring the rule of law. Now is the time to stand strong to protect the democratic ideals we hold dear,” she said.

The resolution passed on a voice vote. None of the Senate’s five Republicans stood to defend the President.

The Senate vote came shortly after President Trump said in a speech at Alamo, Texas, “The 25th Amendment is of zero risk to me, but will come back to haunt joe Biden and the Biden administration. As the expression goes, be careful of what you wish for.”
