The Rhode Island Supreme Court has ruled in the matter of early release from prison to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
The court rejected a bid by the state’s public defender to allow for early release of prisoners from the Adult Correctional Institutions, where the coronavirus has claimed several lives and has infected a large number of inmates.
In a five–page ruling issued on Monday, the court said it is satisfied that the attorney general takes covid health concerns into account when it asks for bail, and that judges also consider coronavirus risks on a case-by-case basis when deciding whether to set bail.
