PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man was charged Wednesday with breaking his 2-month-old daughter’s legs and fracturing her skull, police said.

Carlos Melendez Campos, 23, of Pawtucket was arraigned on three counts of first-degree child abuse.

He was held on $30,000 bond and did not enter a plea because the charges are felonies. He did not have a defense attorney and was referred to the public defender’s office, according to online court records. If he makes bail, he was ordered to stay away from the child.

The suspect was arrested after staff at Hasbro Children’s Hospital contacted Pawtucket police to report the alleged abuse, according to a statement from police.

Police and investigators from the Department of Children, Youth, and Families responded and after interviewing the child’s mother, identified Campos as a suspect, police said.

The baby is expected to survive, Pawtucket Police Detective Sgt. Theodore Georgitsis said.
