A car blew up at a gas pump in Lincoln Tuesday afternoon, the driver was rushed to the hospital, investigators were trying to figure out what caused the blast.

The incident occurred around 2:00 P.M. at the Sunoco APlus at 634 George Washington Highway near the Lincoln Mall.

The rear end of the car, described as a hybrid vehicle which operates on electric and gas power, was destroyed. The rest was heavily damaged, and the gas pumps and overhead canopy sustained visible damage.

The driver, who was not immediately identified, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with lacerations, said Albion Fire District Chief Rick Andrews.

“He started to pump the gas and he has an explosion,” Andrews said. “The operator of the vehicle was hurt, what appeared to be minor injuries.”

He said the state Fire Marshal’s office was called to begin an investigation.

Police cordoned off the gas station and an adjacent motel as the investigation got underway.
