Bicyclist killed in East Providence crash

An East Providence man died after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle Thursday, police said.

The crash that snarled traffic for nearly two hours on the southbound Wampanoag Trail just south of Forbes Street resulted in the death of Anthony Lozito, 81.

He suffered severe injuries in the crash. Police said responding officers and the fire department administered CPR. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the front of a car struck the rear tire of his bicycle. The motorist stopped at the scene and cooperated with the investigation was not injured, has not been identified by police and has not been charged.

The East Providence Police Traffic Unit returned to the scene Friday morning in an attempt to reconstruct the crash.
