A 20-year-old man has been shot and killed near his Providence home. Police say Manee Castillo was shot at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital by family members where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say there may have been a verbal dispute involving several people that was going to turn into a physical altercation when the gun was brought out.

“It seems like there was an argument that may have led to a possible physical altercation,” said Major David Lapatin, Detective Commander of the Providence Police.

“We don’t know if that even happened, or if somebody just produced a gun there prior to… (the confrontation) and shot Mister Castillo.”

Police did not say what sparked the argument.

The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been announced.

Castillo’s death was the city’s fifth homicide of the year.

“It’s an awful thing. We lost another life, but we’re going to work it hard and hopefully have a good result with an arrest,” Maj. Laptain said.
