Rhode Island issues new guidelines to avoid large gatherings, in what officials call a radical and unique opportunity to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

In a news conference late Wednesday afternoon, Governor Gina Raimondo outlined what she calls a radical change in the way we live our lives, offering a new recommendation from public health officials.

“I am now calling on all Rhode Islanders to not attend or organize organized events of 250 people or more for the next two weeks. That’s a guideline that we’re asking all Rhode Islanders to follow,” she said.

Her health director calls it a unique opportunity to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“As a state, we have a unique opportunity to have a positive impact by implementing these steps now, prior to the onset of widespread community transmission,” said Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott.

Raimondo is not recommending any changes for schools, but is suggesting people over age 60 in particular avoid large gatherings.

She also warned against any price gouging of needed supplies.

As of late Wednesday, Dr. Alexander-Scott said five Rhode Island cases tested positive for COVID-19, 94 people had negative tests at the state health laboratories, while eight tests were still pending. As many as 270 people were told to self-quarantine in Rhode Island after having direct contact with a person with COVID-19.
