PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Parents, teachers, students and activists came together for the first time in teams that were appointed to help turnaround Providence schools.

The Providence Journal reports the three Community Design Teams met Thursday night to take on the task of advising the state’s Department of Education through its ongoing intervention in Providence Public Schools.

The meeting at Providence Career & Technical Academy had the design teams congregate for the first time since the state’s takeover of the city’s schools began on Nov. 1.

The state’s involvement followed an independent review last summer that described the capital city’s school district as one of the worst in the country.
