PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A former executive director of the Rhode Island Republican Party has decided to shut down a political action committee that was aimed at backing candidates who oppose President Trump.
Robert A. Paquin III created the “Eighty-Six Trump” PAC in July but told The Boston Globe on Tuesday that he has not raised any money and will be shutting it down.
Paquin says he was “combatting divisive politics with more divisive politics,” and plans to head in a “direction that is more constructive and inclusive.”
Paquin says he is launching a federal super PAC to allow voters to direct independent expenditures to different funds.
Paquin, now of Stonington, Connecticut, was director of the Rhode Island GOP in 2014. He voted for Trump in 2016, but changed his voter registration to unaffiliated.
