PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Student activist groups and parents have petitioned Rhode Island Education Commissioner Angelica Infante-Green for a formal role in the state’s takeover of Providence public schools.

The Providence Journal reports , the groups, represented by the Rhode Island Center for Justice, filed a motion Wednesday with the state Department of Education to ensure parent and student involvement in the proposed plan for improving the city’s underperforming schools.

Jennifer Wood, executive director of the Center for Justice, says Infante-Green can’t overhaul the system without giving students and parents a seat at the table.

Wednesday was the deadline for the four authorized parties to respond to the groups’ motion and none objected. The student organizations plan to comment on the state takeover at a show-cause hearing on Sept. 13.
