(Providence) A local merchants association says damage is not as bad as first feared at a landmark fountain that was struck by a hit and run driver on Federal Hill in Providence.
“That fountain stands the test of time I have to tell you”, said Rick Simone, Executive Director of the Federal Hill Merchants Association. He describes damage to the fountain at DePasquale Square as mostly cosmetic.
The fountain has been dry since an expensive problem developed in the pipes last year. The neighborhood merchants hope it will be partially restored this summer.
Police say a driver slammed into the fountain around 1 AM Monday morning just off Atwells Ave and fled the scene.
