Past workers invited to celebrate Newport Bridge anniversary

By WPRO News

The Turnpike and Bridge Authority is inviting people who built the Newport Bridge to be part of the 50th anniversary celebration this summer.

Turnpike and Bridge Authority Executive Director Buddy Croft estimates several hundred  workers who helped build the bridge between 1966 and 1969 are still alive, and he’s hopeful they’ll reach out to the authority over the next month.

“We’d like to honor them, and we’d also like possibly for them to be part of the storytelling of some of the interesting artifacts and interesting things that happened during the construction,” he said.

Workers or people who know of workers can contact the authority at [email protected] or call (401) 423-0800 and ask for Mr. Raphe Sciola. The 50th anniversary celebration is planned for the end of June.
