PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Parents of children who have died of sepsis in Rhode Island are asking the state to establish standard protocols for detecting the condition.

The mothers of three children who died testified before the House Health, Education and Welfare Committee Wednesday in favor of a resolution requesting the state create protocols similar to ones in place in other states. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , sepsis occurs when an infection triggers an extreme reaction.

Sepsis is the most common cause of death for hospitalized children in Rhode Island and across the U.S.

A Department of Health representative says the agency will work with all parties involved to make sure the proper protocols are developed.
