NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Authorities say a Rhode Island police officer broke his arm when his cruiser was struck head-on by an allegedly drunken driver.

The cruiser and a Jeep Wrangler crashed in North Providence at about 1 a.m. Thursday.

It took rescue crews about 30 minutes to get Officer Christian Ariza out of his vehicle before he was taken to the hospital. He has been on the force about three years.

The driver of the Jeep, 21-year-old Jillian Vega, of North Providence, was charged with drunken driving and other offenses. She was not injured. Police say her vehicle crossed the center line.

Both vehicles suffered extensive front-end damage.

Vega was released on personal recognizance at her arraignment.

Her attorney says she’s shaken up and concerned about the officer’s well-being.
