Mayor Allan Fung’s campaign seized on a Democratic Party mailer connecting Independent candidate Joe Trillo to President Trump, saying it’s an in-kind donation to Governor Gina Raimondo’s campaign that proves she has “cut a deal” with Trillo.
“Gina Raimondo thinks so little of RI Republicans & supporters of the President that she thinks they’re stupid enough to fall for her shenanigans. You don’t have to be a Rhodes Scholar to figure out that Gina Raimondo & Joe Trillo have cut a deal to try and keep the insider deals & corruption as the ongoing status quo on Smith Hill for four more years,” Fung said in a statement. “It’s not going to work! Rhode Islanders are craving change, and that’s what they’re going to vote for next Tuesday.”
Raimondo denied the charge, adding that she leaves political punditry about whether she’s benefiting from Trillo’s candidacy to the press.
“I think that’s absurd. To be honest, I don’t see much difference between Mr. Trillo and Mayor Fung,” she said.
Trillo’s wife Marilyn Cocozza Trillo also virulently dispelled the notion that Trillo is working with Raimondo to politically benefit his stepdaughter, who is a magistrate.
“It is absolutely reprehensible that the Fung campaign or any of the people from the campaign would push this false narrative ahead. But it shakes me to the core because there is no, no scintilla of truth to this,” she said.
