Saying Republicans are being left out of the conversation about women in politics, nearly a dozen women candidates for state and local offices in Rhode Island introduced themselves in a State House news conference Monday, and one said that while knocking on doors on the campaign trail she has been unfairly criticized for her connection to President Donald Trump.
“When I go to a door now, people attack me on national issues,” said Dana Gee, who is running for the state senate seat being vacated by her husband, Mark Gee in the district representing East Greenwich, Narragansett, North Kingstown and South Kingstown.
“This is a Rhode Island race, this is not a national race, so I’m defending everything,” Gee said. “People think I’m evil. It’s really difficult, so I’m here to prove that we’re normal. Republicans are normal people. We just want to make a living.”
The Republican candidates drew clear distinctions with Democrats on issues ranging from gun control to abortion to taxes and budgets. Just one woman candidate echoed the President’s claim that the media is the “enemy of the people”, although some felt that the media is fanning the flames of hate.
