The state Department of Environmental Management has issued warnings about rip currents at a number of beaches. The same storm system that brought heavy rains on Sunday is now affecting the ocean.
DEM said swimming is limited to “knee deep” in the waters at Charlestown Breachway, East Matunuck, Scarborough, and East Beaches, but Misquamicut beach is closed.
Due to continued high risk of #ripcurrents + expected strong undertow, Misquamicut State Beach is closed today; E. Matunuck, Scarborough, E. Beach, Charlestown Breachway are open, but limited to knee deep swimming. Staff assessing throughout the day. When in doubt, don’t go out

“The bigness of Misquamicut really makes it the trouble spot. It’s a half mile of beach directly on the ocean and that’s a lot of terrain to cover,” DEM spokesperson Mike Healey said.
DEM said it’s hopeful conditions will ease starting Tuesday and the swimming restrictions can be dropped.
