WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — The union representing police officers at Rhode Island’s T.F. Green Airport says there isn’t enough staff to man the increasingly popular airport — contradicting the police chief who contends they are overstaffed.
There were 17 percent more travelers at the Warwick airport this past January compared to January 2017. WPRI-TV reportsthe police union filed a grievance last month claiming the public is at risk due to “unsafely low” police staffing.
Union President Robert Simoes says a number of officers are currently on medical leave and other positions have gone unfilled.
In a letter to the union, T.F. Green Police Chief Stephen Cahill denied that the airport is understaffed, saying it’s overstaffed compared to many other airports around the country.
