Raimondo, Fung trade barbs on abortion protections

Gov. Gina Raimondo and her campaign say Republican candidate for governor Allan Fung has yet to spell out how he stands on a state proposal to protect current laws permitting abortion from a potential drive to get the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the protections contained in the landmark Roe V. Wade decision.

“If you want to be governor, the people deserve to know where you stand,” Raimondo said after her campaign issued a statement under the headline, “Fung ‘Politely Declines’ to Protect Rhode Islanders’ Reproductive Freedom”.

“I think people should politely decline to vote for him if he wants to be governor and he’s not going to stake out his position on some of the most important issues that are facing us,” Raimondo told reporters on Monday.

A spokesman for his campaign said Fung would not comment on the statements by Raimondo or her campaign, but referred a reporter to an earlier statement that Fung issued to the Providence Journal for a May 4, 2018 article”

“Upon my conversion to Catholicism two years ago, I joined the Catholic law organization known as the St. Thomas More Society. I have always respected a woman’s right to make a medical decision, but with common sense limitations that many of us can agree upon, including a ban on the disgusting practice of late term abortions, having the option of a plan on the healthcare exchange that does not include abortion coverage, and parental notification for minors.”

“Silence, constantly shifting views, and saying one thing publicly but doing the opposite behind the scenes are not the traits of a leader,” Raimondo campaign spokeswoman Emily Samsel said of Fung.
