PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Democratic Party’s Women’s Caucus is seeking an emergency party meeting to force the ouster of an official over his comments about a state representative’s claim of sexual harassment.
The caucus said Wednesday it had enough signatures to call a meeting regarding the potential removal of Joe DeLorenzo, the second vice chairman of the Democratic State Committee and a former state representative.
DeLorenzo told a radio host “everything is sexual harassment today” when asked about allegations of harassment at the capitol made by Democratic Rep. Teresa Tanzi.
DeLorenzo later apologized and said he did not mean to minimize the problem.
The women’s caucus said the apology was “too little, too late.” The caucus says the party’s bylaws require that a meeting be scheduled within 21 days.
