PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — City officials are moving forward with a plan to add 20 more red-light cameras in Providence.
WPRI-TV reports that the city council approved a proposal Monday raising the maximum number of red-light cameras in the city from 25 to 45.
Police say the 25 cameras already in place have helped to reduce crashes, but critics say they have not been proven effective.
The Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union said using the cameras “negates any ability for an officer to make a judgment call as to the driver’s actions.”
ACLU officials say the purpose of the cameras is to make money. City leaders expect the cameras to generate revenue but say that isn’t the motivation.
The proposal needs one more vote of approval before going to the mayor.
