After months of complaints, delays, and frustration, it’s been reported that the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating “false claims for payment for services” in connection with the state’s botched computer system known as UHIP. According to the Providence Journal, the seriously flawed new $364-million public-assistance computer system, brought to Rhode Island by Deloitte Consulting, could be targets of the investigation, along with two state agencies. The DOJ has demanded all documentation and correspondence between Deloitte and the Department of Administration and the Executive Office of Health and Human Services be handed over, and the deadline was April 10, 2017.

WPRO’s Tara Granahan has been following this story closely and has requested a response from Governor Gina Raimondo on the federal probe and also why taxpayers weren’t informed of the investigation when it was kicked off on March 7th. So far, the governor’s staff has emailed Granahan with the documents from the feds, but no formal response.
