The cold and rainy weather didn’t stop upwards of 50 people from delivering a petition to some of Rhode Island’s federal delegation urging their opposition to President Elect Donald Trump’s policies.
The petition has over 1,700 signatures and was delivered to the offices of Senator Jack Reed and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse in and around Kennedy Plaza.
“One of the things we’ve been very clear about is calling on our federal representatives to be fierce in their opposition against the Trump agenda and use all the of the tools available to them to stand up for Rhode Island values,” says Georgia Hollister Isman of the RI Working Families Party and Resist Hate RI.
Some specific policies that will effect the LGBTQ community has participant Laufton Ascencao Longo concerned.
“They [Trump administration] are talking about putting in conversion therapy nationwide, I can’t deal with that in anyway. That’s crazy to me. We shouldn’t be electrocuting people over their sexual preference,” Ascencao Longo said.
Dana Holmgren was one in attendance and was holding a sign reading, “No to Hate. Stand Strong for Justice.”
“I feel like it’s really important to demonstrate that Rhode Island is standing strong against the hate, racism, anti-Semitism, the Islamophobia, the homophobia as represented by Trump and his incoming administration,” Holmgren said.
The march started at Burnside Park and went through Kennedy Plaza to the senator’s downtown Providence offices Monday afternoon.
