EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) — West Warwick school officials confirm that a 16 year old West Warwick High School junior has been struck and killed by an Amtrak train in East Greenwich.
Amtrak police say the Northeast Regional train heading south from Boston to Washington D.C. hit a person on the tracks just after 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Spokesman Mike Tolbert says he has no further information on what led to the crash, but witnesses on the scene say two teenage girls were on or near the tracks. Tolbert says 378 people were aboard the train, and it was delayed for about three hours.
Police don’t believe that the girl’s actions were intentional at this time.
