WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island regulators have temporarily suspended an application to build a $700-million gas-fired power plant in the town of Burrillville while developers search for a source of water for the facility.
The Providence Journal reports that the Energy Facility Siting Board voted Thursday to suspend the application for the Clear River Energy Center for 90 days and instructed lawyers for Chicago-based Invenergy to provide a status update in 60 days.
Board spokesman Todd Bianco has said that Invenergy failed to provide a cooling water source for the facility after the Pascoag Utility District took the proposed water supply off the table.
Director of Development John Niland says the company appreciates the board’s decision to “pause” the review process.
Burrillville is in Rhode Island’s rural northwestern corner.
